Limitations of BMI
While BMI is a useful screening tool, it does not diagnose body fatness or health directly. It has several limitations that users should be aware of:
- Muscle vs. Fat: BMI does not distinguish between muscle mass and fat. Athletes or bodybuilders may have a high BMI due to increased muscle weight, placing them in the "overweight" or "obese" category despite having low body fat and being metabolically healthy.
- Age Factors: As people age, they often lose muscle and gain fat. An older adult might have a "normal" BMI but still have excess body fat (sarcopenic obesity).
